Wednesday 6th June - Katherine to Kunnunurra

Watch our for wallabies

Did our best get away yet, 7:15am.  We also gained 1.5 hours going into WA time.  We have now at last been in every state and territory in Australia.   Only took us 27 years!

All was going well with the drive until we came across a [dead] wallaby in the middle of a narrow road.  With insufficient room to pass on either side of it, John drove over the top so it passed under the centre of the car.  Unfortunately, because the Reich movers on the wheels are mounted so low it smashed into the front one and, we discovered later, bent the axle.  Luckily this doesn't affect the towing of the caravan, it just means we can't use the movers.  We will not worry about getting the damage fixed until we are back in Sydney.

The underside of the van was a horrible mess so we spent some time after arriving at the camp site hosing it off and generally trying to clean off the bits of dead animal and it's stomach contents.  The smell was appalling but hopefully we have it sorted.

Kunnunurra is in the Ord River irrigation zone and was founded in the early 70's to be a fresh produce growing area for the north of WA.  Most farmers however have switched from growing food to growing sandalwood which is causing some controversy as the dam was not built for this purpose.  So I was very disappointed that the only fruit and vegies I could find where sad and expensive specimens in Coles.  We had been careful this time to approach the quarantine station on the border with no fresh plant food.  This didn't stop a thorough searching of the vehicle and the caravan taking place.  They were also looking for honey, boxes in which vegetables may have been stored and cane toads, which so far have not managed to get into WA under their own steam but are not averse to hitching a ride.  Luckily we had none of the above.
