Saturday 9th June - Purnululu [Bungles]

World Heritage Area

We moved the van into the designated storage area at the campsite and set off on the 54km rough dirt road into the national park.  John was really worried about it due to our previous experiences but all was OK.  We had the tyres at lower pressure this time so they are more forgiving over the rocks.
Domes, Purnululu National Park WA
Cathedral Gorge, Purnululu NP, WA
The road is very corrugated with lots of creek crossings but we arrived in plenty of time to explore the southern end of the park including Picaninny Creek [dry at this time of year], the Domes Walk and Cathedral Gorge.  The sandstone has been worn into beehive shapes and in some places the domes have been eroded away so deeply there are deep chasms.  These chasms support a variety of interesting and in some cases unique plant and animal life.  In the waterholes there are frogs and fish.  No crocs here, it is too high.

Everywhere we go we are amazed by the beauty and variety of wild Australia and this place was no exception.

Picaninny Creek, Purnululu NP,
By mid afternoon we were very hot so went to the 'camp' run by East Kimberley tours where we had booked accommodation for the night.  They mostly run all inclusive 'eco' tours including flying people in or collecting them in special off road buses.  However, they are having a bad season and we were the only people there for the night!  We were disappointed with the basic safari tent for which we had paid a small fortune, but had fun cooking a meal in the outdoor kitchen.  A taste of what is to come next week.
