Thursday 28th June - Greenant & Walker Creeks

More water

Mertens Monitor, Litchfield NP, NT

First walk today was along Greenant Creek and up to the top of Tjaetaba Falls.  There is a lovely rock pool right on the top of the falls but we didn't feel ready for a dip as it was still early in the morning.  Besides the pool was already occupied by a Mertens Monitor!  He was a rather lovely fellow with a green throat.  Greenant creek is aptly named as these colouful ants are everywhere, not just at this creek and they can deliver a nasty bite.

Walker Creek, Litchfield NP, NT
We had heard the best place for a swim was in the cascades and the swimming hole at campsite 6 along Walker Creek.  This creek has 8 secluded bush campsites that can be reserved for those willing to walk in with their camping equipment and each campsite has it's own private stretch of the creek.  The deepest waterhole at campsite 6 was just beautiful and teeming with fish.  The water was probably 3 or 4 metres deep in parts but the bottom was visible through the lovely clear spring fed water.  Best of all we had it all to ourselves for about an hour!

Tin mine relics at Bamboo Creek, Litchfield NP,NT

After this we made a quick visit to Bamboo Creek, so named because a type of native Australian bamboo flourishes here.  This was the site of attempts at tin mining on and off during the first half of the 20th century.  The tin is both on the surface and not far into the ground but getting it out of such a remote location proved unecomic.  The miners all succumbed to silicosis over the years, very sad and makes you realise how tough, not to mention desperate, most of these pioneers were.
