Tuesday 12th June - Geikie Gorge NP

Geike Gorge, Fitzroy Crossing

We decided to go to Geikie Gorge early this morning to get the first boat trip on the gorge which leaves at 8:00am.  So glad we did as there were only 6 other people there at that time which meant the ranger was able to take a small boat and we could get really close to the wildlife which had been thus far undisturbed.  The gorge was absolutely stunning at that time of the morning as the sun struck first the east bank and then moved onto the west.  We saw numerous freshwater crocodiles who were warming themselves on the sandbanks and rocks.  Also lots of fairy martins making nests on the limestone cliffs, cormorants, a monitor lizard and a honeyeater to name a few.  The cliffs are a limestone reef formed on a seabed millions of years ago and then uplifted and eroded by rain.  The lower section of the cliffs are scoured by floods every year so are white, whereas the upper section has a dark cynabacteria growth which does not get washed off.

We spent a lazy afternoon taking a dip in the pool and then getting ready for the next 5 days when we will be camping in our little tent!  We will be travelling into the western end of the notorious Gibb River Road [which is currently in good condition we are told] and then up into some of the gorges on rough access roads.  The caravan is staying at Fitzroy Crossing.  We will be out of contact until at least next Monday, 18th June as these areas are very remote.
