Wednesday 4th July - Darwin

Move to a different caravan park

In the morning we had to leave the caravan park where we had stayed for the last 5 days to one 10 kms further out of town as our space was booked to someone else.  A bit of an annoying inconvenience.

Howard Springs NT
In the afternoon we drove to Howard Springs, which was not that interesting except for some huge barramundi and long neck turtles in the water.  We then drove to Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, which is essentially an artificial billabong.  The area throngs with birds, especially magpie geese and whistling ducks.  The dam wall was closed to foot traffic [but in a car was OK] as there are some salties in the water.  We saw 2 traps that have been laid for the crocs but they are proving hard to catch.  Most interesting is the relationship between huge water pythons and their favoured prey, a type of native water rat.  The rat breeds prolifically but the population is kept in check by the pythons.  There is an enormous biomass of both species in the wetlands, however we didn't see a single one of either.  We watched the sunset over the water.  Sunsets in the NT are truly magnificent.
