Thursday 5th July - Darwin area

Rest Day

Very lazy day today.  We got up late, had a chat with some of the neighbours and washed the caravan.  In the afternoon we went in search of a water filter to use on the caravan and topped up the groceries prior to leaving for Kakadu.  Everything will be expensive there.

We had not anticipated how much water of poor quality we would come across on this trip.  Almost all water in inland Australia is obtained from bores and the calcium levels are very high.  We are a bit concerned about the damage this may be doing to the water heater in the caravan.  However the van is already fitted with a carbon filter on the sink for drinking water so it seemed silly to double filter it through carbon.  In the end we purchased a single filter to fit in series with the intake hose externally.  We have a paper filter for general use as some of the river water is of dubious cleanliness and can be 'muddy'.  For really hard water areas we can remove the paper filter and replace it with a carbon filter.
