Friday 13th July - Darwin to Larrimah

Homeward Bound

We made a good early start today at 7.30am, bid farewell to Darwin and went south for about 480kms through Pine Creek and Katherine to Larrimah, which was a convenient place to stop for the night.

Larrimah [present population about 6] owes it's existence to WWII.  It was a supply depot for troops going up and down the Stuart Highway.  There are relics, including a disused railway line all over the place and these days it really is in the middle of nowhere.

We are staying in the grounds of the pub, called the Pink Panther, which is all that is left now.  Presumably it got the name from American servicemen.  The pub, built in the 1920's to service thirsty drovers was originally at a settlement called Birdum a few kilometres away and now completely deserted.  When the railway line passed them by the pub owners dismantled the building and moved it here in about 1940.  It then serviced drovers and troops.  Now it is falling apart at the seams.  The owner has a wonderful collection of native animals, mostly birds, which he calls a zoo.  I have had a great time looking at all the beautiful birds this afternoon together with a very friendly little agile wallaby and some less friendly crocodiles and snakes.  He also has some sugar gliders and bettongs in one of the cages.  These beautiful little animals are nocturnal so I went over with a torch to have a look at them after dark.
