Friday 27th July - Longreach

Local Pioneers

Today we visited the Stockmans Hall of Fame.  This is a museum dedicated to the European pastoralists who settled the area from about 1860 onwards and is testament to the tough times they faced in such isolation.  Those that took advise from the local Aboriginal tribes fared the best, but even so the settlers didn't really understand the seasonal weather patterns, how to find water and how to deal with the climate and the loneliness.  Many failed but those that successfully managed to raise cattle and Merino sheep on the rich plains of Mitchell grass sometimes did very well indeed.

The museum also put on a show with a 'stockman' yarning on and quoting bush poetry.  He was quite amusing.  The show included horses, a camel, dogs and a team of 6 bullocks that he yoked up as in days of old and they pulled a log onto a cart.
