Sunday 15th July - Barkly Homestead to Mt Isa

Feeling the Cold

Travelled ever eastward today on the Barkly Highway, which has to be the most windswept stretch of road in Australia.  The land is flat, vegetation sparse and the road straight so it makes for monotonous driving except there was a constant crosswind and gusts coming from the south.  We passed the time playing Trivial Pursuits on the ipad.

Shortly after crossing the border into Queensland, we came to the very little town of Camoweal [population about 60 and about the same in dogs].  This was the first settlement we had encountered since leaving the Stuart Highway about 500kms ago.  Camoweal claims it has the longest main street in the country running all the way to Mt Isa 190kms further on.  The main street is very wide as this town was built to service the drovers taking the cattle to the coast at Townsville.  A few of the old buildings still survive.  Nowadays of course this is achieved in a fraction of the time by road train.

After setting up camp in Mt Isa, discovering that Coles was closed, [well this is outback Australia and it is Sunday] we drove out to Lake Moondarra which is a man made lake built in the 1950's to provide a relaible water supply for the growing town.  Actually quite pretty.
