Tuesday 17th July - Mt Isa

More tunnels

This morning we visited the underground hospital which was constructed in 1942 and has now been painstakingly restored.

After the bombing of Darwin, Mt Isa medical staff became concerned the Japanese would target the town next as it was producing metals for the war effort.  A series of tunnels were made into a hill behind the existing hospital as a place to evacuate patients should there be a bombing raid.  It was set up with a theatre, ward, maternity unit and an outpatients.  In the event it was never used and was blocked off and forgotton about for many years.  There is an incredible range of 1940's era medical equipment on display and it was very interesting.

Later, we went for a walk along the shores of Lake Moondarra then came back to town and watched the sunset over the smoking chimney stacks of the mine.  Apparently the EPA fine Xtrata big time if they pollute the air and there are monitors around town but I am not convinced!
