Wednesday 23rd May - Uluru to Watarrka

Kings Canyon

Beetle at Kings Creek
Pink cockatoos
Arrived at the most remote campsite yet at lunchtime then went off to do the Kings Creek walk in the base of the canyon.  No water in the creek of course but there is sufficient moisture trapped in the sand at the base of the steep sided canyon to support fairly large coolabah and river red gum trees and also some rain forest relict plants such as cycads.  This attracts animals and we saw more birds in one place than anywhere previously.  This is so unexpected in the middle of the desert.  We saw a delightful little skink, only about 8cm long who has a bright red tail.  He waves it about in an alluring manner to attract insects.  The birds will not try and eat it though as the colour red denotes poison.  Unfortunately I was not quick enough to get a picture of him but did manage the beetle and the pink cockatoos.

Dingo in Watarrka National Park
Back at the camp, which is situated within the Watarrka National Park, we had our first encounter with a dingo.  A lone female seems to hang around the camp, probably because someone has given her food in the the past.  This is the wrong thing to do as it makes them less afraid of humans which is when they may attack.  This one approached quite close to me when I was seated but ran off as soon as I stood to appear bigger.  The males are more dangerous at this time of year as they are mating and very territorial.
