Tuesday 29th May - West MacDonnell Ranges

Visiting the Gorges

Another long trip out along the West McDonnell ranges but this time mostly on sealed roads.
Gosse Bluff
We went to a lookout and viewed the Gosse Bluff which is where a meteor struck the earth about 145 million years ago.

Redbank Gorge NT

Also looked at several gorges the best of which was Redbank Gorge.  After a rock scramble up the dry riverbed we arrived at a waterhole contained within a very narrow steep sided gorge.  Very cold again today so we didn't feel like going in the water, but we were told there are more waterholes to explore as you travel up the gorge.  The best way to do this is floating over each waterhole on a lilo then carrying it to the next waterhole.  Very refreshing in the summer I am sure.  The gorge was full of budgerigars squawking and sweeping out from the trees in flocks.
