Monday 21st May - Uluru

Uluru 'base walk'

Uluru at sunrise

Started the day very early to drive into the park and watch the sunrise on the rock.  Couldn't believe how many people were there in the pre dawn huddled up trying to keep warm.  As the sun rises, patches of the rock light up as the rays fall on it.

Later, we joined a ranger guided walk where we learnt more about the spiritual importance of the area to the Anangu people.  Also we learned just how incredibly fragile the desert environment is and the measures the park rangers are making in conjunction with the traditional owners to manage the area into the future.  Later we walked the circuit right around the base (base walk), a distance of 10km.  This was a wonderful experience as the texture of the rock and the surrounding vegetation change every few hundred metres.  The temperature was just perfect at around 23 degrees.
