Tuesday 22nd May - Kata Tjuta

Walking the Domes

Kata Tjuta
Drove the 48km from Uluru to Kata Tjuta [also known as The Olgas].  These massive rocks are geologically different from Uluru and the other monolith in the area, Mt Connor [which is 3 times the size of Uluru and is on private property].  All have different rock composition but the surrounding plain has been eroded from the same forces which are still at work on the rocks themselves.

Kata Tjuta has been eroded into a series of massive domes and we took a 4 hour walk which passes between 2 of the largest then loops out onto the plain behind, then back through a shallower opening.  The conglomerate rock is quite soft and is gradually wearing down and filling the valley floors with scree so there is a lot of rock scrambling involved.  However all this is worth it to walk through the steep sided chasms and experience once again the marvellous diversity of plant life in different microclimates.

Unfortunately John injured his foot and was in a lot of pain but he heroically continued the walk and now he has had a chance to rest it is feeling much better.
